Session 2 of 7 Sangha Rains Retreat Practise

The 16 practices of Mindful Breathing

To watch these wonderful videos, watch the 7 video clips each 10- 20 mins looking into the The 16 practices of Mindful Breathing.

These 16 exercises are separated (for convenience but not in reality) into the four aspects of our being -  Form/Body, feelings, mind, and objects of the mind.

  • The First 4 exercises of Mindful Breathing are to do with the Body
1st exercise- is to recognise the breathing fully
2nd exercise - full awareness  enjoying the whole of the breath from the beginning to the end.

This week please watch this first of the seven clipshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOkphTWkY1Q  - 20 mins
Great teaching on the first two exercises of awareness of breathing - to come home and become alive.

  • If you are inspired to understand deeper please watch this extra 20 minute teaching for you. I would love for us to share a bit about this next meeting.

In this short teaching video from the Deer Park Monastery, Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh (Thay) talks about the music of mindful breathing. Whenever a lot of difficult mental formations come up, Thay advises us to say, "Listen everyone, you have a chance to express yourself. But now, let's listen to music." The music is the sound of our mindful breathing. Mindfulness is the musician using the instrument of our breath like a violin softly soothing and calming our difficult mental formations. As lyrics, we can use many gathas like "I have arrived, I am home" and "In, Out, Deep, Slow."
